Metro Atlanta sits squarely in a corridor that sees fast-moving, high-wind thunderstorm lines several times a summer, and Georgia Power's own outage maps show that tree-heavy suburban feeder lines in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties are among the slowest to restore after a major line of storms knocks down limbs onto distribution wires. A downtown or Midtown Atlanta high-rise building fed by underground utility lines can ride out a storm with barely a flicker, while a garden-style community in outer Cobb or unincorporated DeKalb served by overhead lines running through mature tree canopy can lose power for 24 to 72 hours after the same storm. That difference is not cosmetic for a resident who depends on an oxygen concentrator, a powered wheelchair charging overnight, or medication that needs refrigeration.
The gap between communities that treat backup power as a checkbox and communities that treat it as a real operational plan shows up fastest in July and August, when Metro Atlanta's afternoon storm pattern is most active and the grid is already under peak air-conditioning load. A family touring in a mild-weather month can easily miss this because nothing about a sunny tour day forces the question. Georgia's licensing rules for Personal Care Homes (111-8-62) and Assisted Living Communities (111-8-63), both administered by the Department of Community Health's Healthcare Facility Regulation Division, require a written emergency preparedness plan covering evacuation and continuity of care during a utility disruption, but the rules do not mandate a specific generator size or a guarantee of whole-building power. In practice this means one licensed ALC in Sandy Springs might have a generator sized to run the entire HVAC system, elevators, and every resident room, while another licensed ALC in a different part of the metro might have a smaller unit that only keeps emergency lighting, the nurse call system, and a handful of medical-refrigeration outlets running. Both can be fully compliant with state licensing while offering meaningfully different levels of protection.
This is exactly the kind of gap the Georgia DCH Healthcare Facility Regulation Division facility search cannot answer for you, because emergency-power capacity is not a field in the public license lookup. The only reliable way to know what a specific community can actually do during a multi-day outage is to ask the administrator directly, in writing if possible, and to ask for the generator's fuel type, run-time on a full tank, and which parts of the building it powers.
Start with fuel and duration: is the generator diesel, natural gas, or propane, and how many hours can it run before it needs refueling or a tank refill from a supplier who may also be dealing with storm-related delivery delays across Fulton and Cobb counties. A natural-gas generator tied to the utility gas line generally has a real advantage here because it does not depend on a fuel truck being able to reach the property when roads are blocked by downed trees, which was a documented problem for several Metro Atlanta communities during past summer storm events.
Next, ask what the generator actually powers. 'We have a backup generator' can mean anything from full building power including air conditioning, to a narrow emergency circuit that keeps hallway lighting and the nurse call system running but leaves resident rooms without air conditioning in August heat. For a family with a parent who needs a CPAP machine, an oxygen concentrator, or refrigerated insulin, ask specifically whether resident-room outlets are on the emergency circuit, not just common areas. It's also worth asking whether the community coordinates with the county's emergency management agency — Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties each maintain an Office of Emergency Management that tracks vulnerable-population facilities — because a community that has registered with its county EMA and participates in local emergency planning tends to get faster attention for well-checks, generator fuel resupply priority, and debris-clearing access than one that hasn't.
When you're comparing two or three assisted living communities across Metro Atlanta — say, one in Buckhead, one in Marietta, and one in Woodstock — put the generator answer next to the price and the care-level answer on the same comparison sheet rather than treating it as a side conversation. A community that is $400 a month cheaper but runs on a small emergency-lighting-only generator with no fuel-resupply plan is not actually the better value if your parent needs powered medical equipment and the alternative has full-building backup power and a documented relocation partner.
Georgia's climate means this isn't a hypothetical for Metro Atlanta the way it might be in a region with milder weather patterns. Severe thunderstorm season runs roughly April through September, overlapping almost entirely with the months when losing air conditioning is a genuine health risk for older adults, particularly those on medications that affect heat tolerance. Treat the generator question the same way you'd treat a question about staffing ratios or medication management — as a core part of the decision, not an afterthought you circle back to after move-in.
